Summary

When run on the agent, an Office application hangs with a popup saying that it will "Exit design mode."

Solution

This happens when the security for macro execution is too high, or macros are disabled altogether. Confirm the settings on a working machine by:

Office 2000

  • Start the Office application (Excel in this case).
View | Toolbars | Visual Basic pops up a new toolbar and there is a "Security…" button on it. Click the button and select "low."

  • Go to "View | Toolbars | Visual Basic."

  • Click the "Security…" button.

    • The setting should be "Medium" or lower.

Office 2003

  • Start the Office application (Excel in this case).

  • Go to "Tools | Options."

  • Click the "Security" tab.

  • Click the "Macro Security…" button.

    • The setting should be "Medium" or lower.

If it is higher on the agents (for users that own agent processes), adjust that setting for all users that run agent services.
